Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation (AHREF) is an autonomous organization spearheading research for the Apollo Hospitals Group (www.aherf.org). AHERF is registered society at Chennai created as a non-for-profit organization. Further, AHERF is a DSIR recognized organization and is guided by as scientific advisory council comprising of the 23 best minds in science & medicine in India, AHERF is also India's single largest and oldest Management Organization (SMO) which has the experience of 625 clinical trials across its 8 locations pan-India at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Madurai, Mysore and New Delhi. AHREF is also focused on leading basic & translational research as a part of which it has completed establishing its state-of-art stem cells and molecular biology center at Hyderabad recently. AHERF is also committed to research related educational initiatives and currently offers courses in clinical research.

The Site Management Organization within AHERF ensures ethical conduct of global and domestic Ph-2 to ph-4 multi-centric trials. For the same, each site has its own local ethics committee and supplemented by a central ethics committee at Delhi for Global multi-centric trials. Currently, AHERF operates out of 8 operational sites and has a plan to leverage its network to grow this base to several more centers for promoting clinical research.

With over 100 dedicated trained and certified clinical research team members. AHERF conducts sponsored phase III, II and IV trials and research projects for registration of the investigational product / marketing. AHERF has experience in conducting studies in Oncology. Cardiology, Diabetology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Rheumatology and Others. AHERF has presently over 200 ongoing funded clinical trials from various pharmaceutical companies and CROs and it is associated with multinational pharmaceutical clients like Eli Lilli, Ranbaxy, Bayer, Novartis, Aventis, Nova Nordisk, Astra Zeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Cordis, dr.Reddys Lab, shanta biogenics,Torrent,Wyeth, GSK, Glenmark, Merck, BMS, etc. and with leading Contract Research Organizations(CRO) like Covance, Quintiles, Pharmanet, Kendle, PPD, SIRO, Manipal Acunova, Omnicare, Paraxel. Synchron, ClinRx. Reliance Life sciences, Pharm Olam, etc.

The road map for research developed by AHERF short listed the following specific areas of research in

  • Cutting edge technology.
  • Clinical and nonclinical trials.
  • Epidemiological research.
  • Developing human resources.
  • Resource mobilization for the research activities.

The research projects are reviewed and approved by the scientific advisory committee members before review by Central Ethics Committee of Apollo Hospitals group, located at Hyderabad. An established cell and molecular biology research centre (CMBRC) lab at AHERF Hyderabad is functional and has initiated research proposals is stem cell research. Proposals are being developed for molecular diagnosis and biomaker development areas. A cord blood bank is functional at Apollo Ahmedabad as a JV between Apollo Group, StemCyte Inc and Cadila Pharmaceuticals, which will initiate clinical trials on stem cell research. A phase I unit is established at Apollo health city Hyderabad which is functional. Epidemiological screening and data collection studies are being conducted in various centers of AHERF. The first project report on evaluation of reference interval for some biochemical and hematological parameters was released by ICMR director on 9 March 2010.  http://www.aherf.org/
