  1. The Background
  2. There are over 8,000 units that have license to manufacture AYUSH drugs and formulations in India that are worth about Rs.8000 crores annually, about 99% of whom having an annual turnover of less than Rs. 10 crores, with only about 28 units crossing the Rs.50 crore figure. All of them need personnel trained to carry out the different operations involved in the manufacture, such as inspection of incoming raw materials, executing the different stages in the production process, Testing and QA, Packaging, Product Development and Clinical Trials, Marketing, compliance with Indian and Global regulations and standards etc. While some of the requirements would be common to AYUSH as well as Western systems of manufacture, the personnel manning the AYUSH drug industry would have to have a good level of knowledge, exposure and training specific to their systems and processes.

    The present program is aimed at meeting this need of the AYUSH Industry in India in a systematic and sustained manner. A significant proportion of the faculty would be drawn from the AYUSH Industry, R&D and government. Coming together of Anna University, AAMAOI, TASUDMA and CTMR to launch this program ensures that the program has the required academic rigour as well as industry relevance.

  3. Structure and Curriculum
  4. The Certificate Program has a modular structure, consisting of five modules as below:

    • Module -1: Product Development including Clinical Trials in AYUSH industry

    • Module -2: Good Manufacturing Practices in AYUSH industry

    • Module -3: Testing & QA in AYUSH drug manufacture

    • Module -4: Production & Marketing Management for AYUSH

    • Module -5: Standards and Regulatory aspects of AYUSH industry

    Each Module would be of about 4 weeks duration on a full time basis, and would have both theory and practical components as detailed in the Syllabus of each module. In addition to these 5 modules that take up 20 weeks, the Program would also have at the end an Internship/Project work of 4 weeks duration, thereby making the total duration of the Program to be 24 weeks. Successful completion of the 24 weeks of the full time program is required by a candidate to be awarded the "PG Certificate in Technology & Management for AYUSH Pharmaceutical Industry" Certificate.

    Instead of the full 24 weeks (about 6 months) program, candidates (such as those who may be already working in AYUSH or other related industries) may also enroll for any of the five individual modules of their choice and on successful completion receive a "Certificate of Completion" for that module. As these are standalone modules, each module will have an "Introduction to AYUSH" section of about 3-4 hours duration to provide the required background. To apply for the individual Modules, it is not necessary that the candidates be graduates. If a candidate completes all the five modules in this manner, and then does the 4 weeks Internship/Project work, he/she then can additionally receive the "PG Certificate in Technology & Management for AYUSH Pharmaceutical Industry" also, provided he/she is a graduate.

  5. Eligibility and Fees
  6. Intake to the training program would be graduates from programs like BSMS/BAMS/BUMS, B. Pharm/M. Pharm, B.Sc. in Chemical/Biological Sciences (or equivalent), BE in Biotechnology (or equivalent), or other similar appropriate programs. Admission to the one-year program would be open and through advertisements, held once or twice an year as per demand, and appropriate admission procedures would be used to ensure that the applicants indeed have the required background and preparedness to complete the program successfully. For candidates sponsored by industries, exceptions to the admission process could be considered, though the basic qualification requirements will still hold.

    Fees would be Rs. 49,500/- for the full course, and Rs.9,000 /- for each module, excluding taxes.

    All aspects of the Training Program would comply with the broad norms and guidelines of Anna University relevant to such programs, and would be supervised by a Course Advisory Committee consisting of nominees from AU-KBC Centre, AMMAOI, TASUDMA and CTMR, in addition to external experts.
